The shortlist features around 100 British innovations; from the splitting of the atom to the invention of the World Wide Web and the discovery of the structure of DNA. Voting runs throughout National Science and Engineering Week, with the winning innovation to be announced on 25 March.

The list is a journey though much of what we take for granted today and it is amazing that it was all invented in one small country somewhere of the edge of Europe!
