Adelaide Fringe is giving artists the chance of a lifetime – to design the poster for the 2013 festival. In the Fringe spirit of open-access, the competition is open to everyone including artists, designers, students and amateurs-alike, but must incorporate the theme Inside Out, which Fringe Director Greg Clarke says is, “Playful, absurd and open to multiple interpretations.”
Mr Clarke decided to theme the upcoming Fringe following the success of the 2012 theme - The Tour of the Unexpected. “In 2013, Inside Out will be applied primarily to the poster and the Fringe Parade,” said Mr Clarke. “The design will also be used across advertising campaigns, merchandising and all printed collateral including street banners and on the cover of 350,000 printed Fringe Guides.”
The poster competition has traditions dating back to the inaugural Adelaide Fringe which took place in 1960. As Fringe directors have come and gone, and the festival has morphed and changed, the competition has remained. “Collectively, the posters become a wonderful historical reference of the art, culture and social mores of every Fringe past,” said Mr Clarke.
The theme Inside Out was devised to embrace the creative process, “An idea, a spark, an inkling, a thought, an internal question or craving is often the starting point for an artist when they begin to create work. When those things that were hidden inside the artist’s head, in their imagination and in their heart, then manifest as art, that which was inside, is now out for all of us to enjoy.”
Mr Clake suggested the theme may also be interpreted literally such as taking experiences, activities or objects that are usually found inside and putting them outside, “Whether this is a theatre piece performed in an unconventional outside setting or things turned upside down, inside out and back to front,” he said.
All design submissions must be made online and artworks may be created in any medium or style including digital, graphic, a painting, a drawing, photography or even a sculpture. However, the final entry must be two dimensional.
The winner of the poster competition will receive $1,000 cash and enjoy national and international exposure as their design promotes Adelaide Fringe – the largest arts event in the Southern Hemisphere which in 2012 saw over 1.59 million attendances at free and ticketed events.

Entries must be received by 5pm, Thursday August 30 2012 and the winner will be notified by September 6 2012. The winning entry will be revealed in spectacular fashion at a media launch on Friday 26 October 2012.
Adelaide Fringe 2013 will take place during 24 days from February 22 – March 17.
