Munch and Warhol star in tomorrow’s Prints sale at @sothebys

An eclectic group of works – get yourself a Warhol soup can screenprint or a Goya Disasters of War etching

The September Prints & Multiples sale at Sotheby’s is full of works by Andy Warhol, has several Rembrandt etchings and an Albrecht Dürer Rhinoceros, but the stand-out pieces are a group of eleven Edvard Munch prints. Of these Two Human Beings. The Lonely Ones is one of the most powerful images Munch created in his investigations into the human condition. The prints show Munch’s ongoing experimentation in different types of printing and different inks, the monotone pieces being more successful that the coloured works. Together the ten lots are estimated to fetch over £1m.

Pop art is well-represented with several Roy Lichtenstein images including a pale Crying Girl from 1963 – more personal and less corporate than his later, much brighter and more precisely made works. Thirty Andy Warhols are up for sale, including some iconic images including Marilyn, Mao and the Queen, along with pieces by Richard Hamilton and Tom Wesselmann. A Great American Nude Cut-Out  by Wesselmann is estimated at £4-6000 and should be snapped up.

Sixteen Rembrandt images and 33 Picasso pieces, including ceramics are also in the sale, along with a single Giacometti lithograph (an hors commerce print) which looks a tempting buy.

Lots more big names fill out the sale including Damien Hirst and David Hockney, though a small Morandi natura morta is one of the other works to keep an eye on (estimate £5-7000).

The Prints & Multiples sale is 16th September at 2pm in London.
