No longer do the heroes of films have to be spies or superheroes. The art world everywhere will be cheering when the Monuments Men is released, as it stars museum directors, curators and art historians. Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history it focuses on a World War II platoon rescuing artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.
With the art trapped behind enemy lines, and the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these men – all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, they risked their lives to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture.
The Monuments Men is directed by George Clooney, who co-wrote and co-produced alongside Grant Heslov (The Ides of March); Clooney also leads the all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Hugh Bonneville.
The Monuments Men is released on 14th February.
