Did you know that ‘Cava’ is named after the cellars in which the bottles are stored?! This Cava is from the Penedes region of Spain, a few miles west of Barcelona. It is a light, wheat-coloured wine that works well as an aperitif. The alcohol is only 11.5% and the bubbles are light and gentle with none of the harshness that can ruin some sparkling wines.
It is easy-drinking and could make a great spring picnic accompaniment. Made by Castillo Peralda it is composed mainly of Parellada grapes grown on chalky soils. The conditions impart a crisp freshness to the wine with a hint of biscuit in the finish.
This Cava is currently £8.99 at Waitrose.
