Albín Brunovský – artist of fantasy

Every time I look at his pictures I feel like I am falling into a dream: a dream that I may have experienced, or one that is waiting for me somewhere behind a corner. It feels like I am back in ancient times, where gods were showing their power to poor humans; they sent water or fire as they liked, played with men like they were toys, reined in their power and struggled because of beauty or wisdom, or just because they wanted to experience the simplicity of human life.

Just human, like any other, Albín Brunovský, Slovakian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, became one of the biggest men in Slovak art history. When I  look at his pictures, I just cannot stop staring.  His use of nature, wood, trees, leaves, is all tied together, as though you walk through the Garden of Eden. You feel movement and peace at the same time: pleasure and delight, femininity, energy, forces of nature, innocence and sin, powerful lines and shapes, an intersection of reality and fantasy.

Fantasy, imagination, romance: it makes you feel like you enter another world. It depends on you whether it is a better or worse one. Human in its presence, it is an integral part of this world, and it idyllically flows with it. Brunovský’s highly surrealistic works are odes to nature and humanity. When you discover his pictures, you become part of them; you enter a world of illusions, another wonderland.  You do not have any choice but to come in and rest inside. Enjoy.
