Brief artists statement:
I believe my function as an artist is to help every member of this planet feel more deeply, and believe in our human capacity more acutely. With art we endeavour together in myriad ways, our consciousness may shift to become something that we aspire to be individually and/or collectively. We must be encouraged to believe. I am messianic about art. I believe it is nourishment for our mind, our spirits and our human circuitry. With art we can look at ourselves and the world anew. With new vision we can ask ourselves the right questions to address the wholeness, and the truths of this experience here together on earth. We are a single human family. None of us are spiritually more privileged to be here, and therefore we must care at the deepest level about our world as our family.
How did you become an artist? Did you always dream of a life in the art-world?
I am one. I have always felt my function is to find out who I am and why I am here. Making art is inextricably linked to that. People who don’t make art are often more enmeshed in the art world than the artists. The artist’s primary function is to make art.
How has your education helped your career?
My art education has in that I studied with working artists at art school. I have looked at art and spoken about art. Education is ongoing and doesn’t necessarily occur in a classroom.
Do you work as an artist full-time? Describe your typical day. Do you have a routine?
In the summer I make art full time, I also teach and so I make art about 3 hours a night during the work week during the non summer months and about 5 hours a day on the weekend
Which historical and contemporary artists do you refer to most often? How are you influenced by their work?
I couldn’t tell you. Artists and references creep up when they need to. I don’t think there is a way of knowing how we are influenced by much of what actually influences us.
What are the other influences on your work?
A billion years of evidence.

Today- Lyne Lapointe at Jack Shainman, NYC

This past weekend – Cindy Sherman at MoMA, NYC
What is your favourite art gallery?
I am partial to Zwirner and Shainman, but I really love and dislike shows everywhere.
