About my studio: My studio is in Mapua, a small seaside town in the South Island of New Zealand. It is only temporary as the commercial complex is up for sale but it is perfect for me. It is a long and skinny space and I can stand my large-scale paintings next to each other to see how they are working together.
About my work: I love to travel and wander the streets of large cities. My art practice explores non-places, which are transitory and generic spaces such as airports, transit stations and streets. I believe wandering non-places is the best way to get a ‘feel’ of the space. In the non-place I explore the tension between the chaos of the crowd and the quiet of the individual. The empty, private in-between spaces are highlighted; along with the unknown, freedom and anonymity that the city and canvas offer.
