Curzon On Demand brings the big screen to your sitting room

Film lovers will already know the Curzon cinema chain as a place for cineastes to find new independent films and classic matinees. Now with their On Demand service, Curzon have brought the latest releases of world and indie cinema into the sitting room. Films are available on line from the same day that they are released on the big screen, any time of the day or night.

Curzon On Demand has the usual enter your details/click on an email sign-up procedure and is free to join. Films cost between £2 and £6 to rent for seven days. There are sections of recommended films, bestsellers and new releases to help you choose what to watch from the large selection of independent films. You can use the useful browse function to sort films into a large number of categories and languages, as well as genres and years.

I used the system to watch Ari Kaurismaki‘s latest film, Le Havre, set in France instead of his usual Finland. He may have changed country but he hasn’t let up on the painful comedy.

Set among the everyday lives of the Channel city’s have-nots and illegal immigrants, this is a snapshot of struggles and problems. It is, however, leavened with a humour that stops the sadness being entirely unremitting. Technically the film played well and I couldn’t fault the quality of the streaming over my broadband connection.

Curzon On Demand is a great new way to access unusual and less-heard of films that are otherwise hard to see, especially for people who live away from large cities and independent cinemas.

Verdict? Two thumbs up. I’ll certainly be returning.
