Upcoming artistic events in Stoke-on-Trent

Appetite is a three year programme that is inspiring people in Stoke-on-Trent and encouraging them to get involved in the arts. You can read more about the project here, but below are some of the highlights of the artworks and cultural events that are coming this summer.

The Bell by Periplum

2-3 August

The Bell is a scorching spectacle that tells a tale of war and peace in an extraordinarily explosive 45 minutes. A battle takes place all around the audience in a world of fire and a fight for life. With acrobatics and moving action, including stilts, pyrotechnics and aerial performance, this is a sure-fire thrill that will propel you to the front-line.

Play Me, I’m Yours

1-31 August

Up to 20 street pianos, decorated by local artists and community groups, will be located in parks, squares and other public spaces in Stoke-on-Trent for anyone to play and enjoy. At the end of the project the pianos will be donated to local charities and community groups. This is part of an artwork by Luke Jerram.

Open House NoFit State Circus

23-24 Aug

Directed by Orit Azaz, Open House is an immersive, ever-evolving large-scale circus installation where anything can happen and everything becomes an excuse for performance and spectacle. Flowing through the town, setting up in a city square, unfolding washing lines, flags, umbrellas and piles of bric-a-brac, there is no big top but a colony of musicians, acrobats and aerialists exploding out of caravans – a joyous menagerie of circus chaos setting the town alive.

and the big one…

The Big Feast Weekend takes over Stoke from Friday 29 August to Sunday 31st August. It brings to the city centre Faust by SouthPaw dance, as well as Folk in a Box – Britain’s smallest music venue and Audible Forces, an intricate landscape of musical installations powered by the wind.

Add in the unexpected delights of the Stoke oatcake and this summer is the time to visit Stoke-on-Trent.
