Stainless steel was discovered in Sheffield in 1913 by Harry Brearley. To celebrate the centenary there is an exhibition at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield that brings together some of the earliest and most recent stainless steel items, from the functional to the artistic – and even the wearable.

A huge number of products have been made in stainless steel and the show demonstrates how it quickly went from a scientific curiosity to an essential part of domesticity.
Knives from various makers 1920s-1940s
Stainless steel was originally sold under several different brand names, including Rustnorstain and Everbright. Cutlery that didn’t tarnish was new and buyers had to be convinced that it was a good idea.

The show contains several recent creations, from the elegant tea strainer above to fashion design and fine art – all utilising stainless steel.
