Canada / USA based world music group Niyaz performs electronic/acoustic music for the 21st century. They are Azam Ali (lead singer), Loga Ramin Torkian (multi-instrumentalist) and Carmen Rizzo (electronic musician). Niyaz, which means ‘yearning’ in Persian and Urdu, was formed in 2005. While their immediate goal was to explore the music and identity of Iranians living in exile and struggling to maintain their cultural identity in the modern world on their first two acclaimed records, Niyaz and Nine Heavens, the band has expanded that theme with Sumud, their most recent album released in May 2012.
