All this week Yamaha Music London is hosting the Polish music week, organised by the Polish Cultural Institute. At 1pm each day at 152-160 Wardour Street you can wander past the grand pianos in the Yamaha showroom and hear pianists, cellists, a jazz trio or a violinist all from Poland. Designed to celebrate Poland’s cultural connections with the UK it will also showcase the next generation of Polish artists for British audiences.
Today Eliza Safjan’s expressive voice could be heard singing works from Chopin and his compatriot Karol Szymanowski, accompanied on the piano by Julia Samojlo. Samojlo caresses the piano keys, bringing out the nuances in the music. Sajjan’s powerful soprano soared when necessary, ranging widely yet expressed emotion with sensitivity.
All performers are currently London-based and already widely regarded as some of the most promising Polish musicians. An extensive repertoire will be showcased during the week, including works from Fryderyk Chopin, Karol Szymanowski, Henryk Wieniawski, Witold Lutos?awski and Gra?yna Bacewicz.
