Word Up is a community bookstore in Washington Heights, NYC. They have been forced out of their old location after rents were raised unexpectedly. One man loves the store so much he sang a love song to it!
Washington Heights is the lowest income neighborhood in Manhattan and needs this all-volunteer-run and not-for-profit book haven and arts community centre. Even the schools themselves can’t keep their libraries running. Kids need a place to access books and culture and Word Up is that place! They had open mics, live readings, poetry nights, music, film… you name it! They also sold books by local authors and poets, had workshops and other programs for youth, and on and on. Word Up is needed back in the hood!
In order to reopen they need to raise funds…
Please visit their indiegogo site to help out and see the rewards on offer.
Thanks for the profile Flaneur, please stay in touch. We’d like to let you know how Word Up’s rebirth turns out! Many, many thanks!
