This is a delicious white wine made by Bruce Jack of the Flagstone Winery in the Western Cape. Jack has really taught the sauvignon flavours to sing, and they launch into song the moment this bottle is unscrewed. Plenty of lemon and gooseberry notes and a long finish make this a good choice as a wine to sip as an aperitif. A very clear, pale colour, I didn’t find the nose as strong as I expected, but the wine more than makes up for this in the mouth.
The vineyards that grows the grapes for this wine are some of the most remote in South Africa. Jack was out hiking when he came across them, and he made it a mission to seek out the owners and buy their grapes. It was a good decision as the micro-climate makes for a nuanced wine that hints at figs and green apples whilst remaining cleansing and fresh.
Verdict – a well-rounded wine that will make an enjoyable aperitif.
