Sport in Art – at MOCAK Krakow

Zbigniew Libera, Body Master: A Play Kit for Children, 1994-1995/1997

Sport in Art after History in Art, the second exhibition in the series which shows how artists see the issues that matter in people’s everyday lives.

Assa Kaupi, The Race is Over, 2011, Galleri Andersson/Sandström, Stockholm/Umeå

Sport performs a terrific therapeutic role, relieving us of layers of animal aggression. Mankind has hit on a great idea: how to fight and triumph, without causing any real harm. The world of sport with its elaborate constructs of rules and regulations is a treasure trove of symbols and a perfect context in which to analyse the secret nooks and crannies of human existence. No wonder that, in art, sport features frequently and in many guises.

Sport in Art, an international exhibition which presents over forty artists, takes on board the interpretion of the central theme as widely as possible – in terms of both content and the range of media used. We will show classical painters, film makers and objects as well as artists who put their lives at risk in confrontation with extreme sports.

Both this exhibition and the entire cycle aim to show the close relationship between life and art and set out to prove that art aids understanding of the human condition. The exhibition reveals that there is a grain of solemnity in any game and that, once you capture that solemnity, you may then have fun with it.
