Naked footballers, theatre and Kookaburras

You don’t often get to see naked footballers in the theatre. Some would say this is a very good thing and one of the reasons they frequent the South Bank rather than Stamford Bridge. Others would opine that there is a time and a place for everything except Morris dancing and happily pop along to the auditorium with a pair of binoculars.

La Boite in Brisbane, Australia is the location for The Truth about Kookaburras, the  play by Sven Swenson which premiered in 2009. With a cast of nineteen the play examines male identity in the setting of a football team celebrating a big win. Drawing from real-life reports of footballers-behaving-badly the play follows the euphoria and the next-day comedown of police and recrimination.

Since 2009 the script has been read by Edward Albee, who has advised changes which have been incorporated into the new production. The cast rehearsed the play for 18 months in order to recreate the necessary athletic skill and courage needed to play the three hour long whodunit.

The truth about Kookaburras is on from 6 June to 23 June at La Boite, Brisbane.
