Opera by @StreetwiseOpera – giving the homeless a voice for 10 years!

The award-winning Streetwise Opera is a charity that uses music to help homeless people. They run weekly music programmes in homeless centres across the UK and stage operas starring the same performers. 2012 is their 10th anniversary. Over which time they have worked with over 3000 people and produced eight operas seen by hundreds of thousands of people.

Every week homeless people benefit from many different programmes. These include concert presentations, workshops, theatre trips and the Streetwise choir. This is the UK’s first choir composed of people who have experienced homelessness. A workshop is a two hour singing and acting session that builds self-esteem and confidence, whilst being fun and social.

Streetwise Opera is doing great work in an important area, in many parts of the country. They are having a great effect on the lives of many people. One person has said, ‘Being homeless means that for many people I don’t exist. With Streetwise Opera I do more than exist. I live.’ Their productions have been called ‘Mesmerising’, ‘Astonishing’ and ‘Awe-inspiring,’ by the national press.
