Of All The People In All The World ? 10th Anniversary Homecoming
A moving and intriguing representation of the world’s people, politics, history and current affairs, told using 23 tonnes of rice.
Birmingham?based theatre company Stan’s Cafe’s celebrate the 10th anniversary of their famed performance piece, Of All The People In All The World, with a very special return to the city. Recently wowing Australian audiences at the Perth International Arts Festival, the free to visit show, which straddles the line between theatre and art, can be seen at Two Snowhill, Birmingham, from Friday 12 to Sunday 21 April 2013.
Both monumental and moving, Of All The People In All The World uses grains of rice to represent individual people and through carefully measured piles, communicates human population statistics in a direct and powerful way.
These statistics, including country and city populations, people being born and dying each day and commuters passing through Snow Hill station, tell the daily, changing story of the planet’s inhabitants. Twenty three tonnes of rice ? representing 1.5 billion people ? will be shipped into Two Snowhill for the event.
Conceived by James Yarker, Stan’s Cafe’s founder and artistic director was inspired to create a meaningful way to bring incomprehensible statistics to life after observing how we often struggle to truly grasp huge numbers.
Established in 1991 in Birmingham, Stan’s Cafe (pronounced ‘Caff’) is a theatre company comprising artists from a variety of disciplines. The critically acclaimed company has a wide portfolio of work, including theatre productions, art installations, film, street and even under water performances.
