Inflation and the minimum wage aren’t typical musical topics, but The Skints have created a well-crafted reggae protest about the world’s financial woes. Already topping the iTunes Reggae Chart, Reggae-dub outfit The Skints three-track ‘Short Change’ EP continues to exhibit the four-piece’s trademark punk-inspired East London sound.
Lead single ‘The Cost Of Living Is Killing Me’ is a bittersweet ode to the current economic climate played out over an infectious rhythm influenced by the thumping soundsystem reggae of Jah Shaka, while second track ‘Break Me Down’ features the talents of Jovel aka Random Impulse in a sunny offering with a nostalgic feel.
Third track ‘Broken Hearted’ is described as ‘Jamaican dancehall-influenced party pop’, with an undeniably feel-good vibe that perfectly showcases The Skints’ ability to transcend genres.
This might well be the soundtrack to London’s 2014 summer.
