Happy Birthday to Camberwell Arts Festival which is now 20 years old and is still celebrating the best of art, culture and creativity across SE5. This year’s festival includes new public art commissions, an open-air art trail, pop-up choirs and Jazz in the Crypt, along with events from a short film festival to a zine picnic. Local artists’ studios will also be open to the public. Full details are available here.
The Lucky Dip project brings site-specific art to twenty locations across SE5. These reach right across Camberwell, from Myatts Fields to Lucas Garden and Burgess Park to Ruskin Park. Twenty artists have been chosen from an open competition, and been allocated a space at random. These include a bandstand, an old lime kiln, an advertising hoarding-type space on the side of a house, fences, benches and many more.
You can download a festival programme with a map of the area and locations of all the artworks here. The artists involved and the locations of their work are as follows:
The Flaneur is involved in the judging and walked around Camberwell looking at the different pieces last weekend. Wandering from artwork to artwork is a pleasant way to spend the afternoon – if it looks like rain you can shelter in the Myatt’s Fields Roundhouse and Bandstand, so the English summer weather is no excuse not to get some cultural exercise.
The different works interact with their environments to differing degrees. Some also pique the curiosity of passers-by more than others. Pieces include gold-painted statues as seen on the Southbank, bubble wrap interventions, community libraries and golden trees. To avoid clues to who might win we’ll leave it there, but the show is on until the 22nd of June, so download a map and start exploring!
