Last weekend a new urban art gallery popped up in Shoreditch – celebrating the first show of the Graffiti Street Gallery with cocktails, music and live painting in the street by Pichiavo and Hunto – a man with no fear of heights. The gallery is owned and run by Rosh Niazi-Boroumand and Donna Haden, who have both been collectors for years. They spared us a few moments at the launch to talk about the new Graffiti Street Gallery.
Why did you start Graffiti Street Gallery?
Rosh: What brought us together was our passion for anything urban. Donna’s more into pop art, I’m more into graffiti and street stuff.
Do you paint as well?
R: No I don’t. A lot of people do think that! We are involved, we have a hands on approach as we help out the artists as well with preparation.
Where do you find your artists?
R: A lot of artists approach us. We have chosen artists with unique styles that we thought in our eyes were up and coming and had something new to offer as well.
Donna: We try and make it as different as possible, some stencils, all totally different.
Are all the artists from London?
R: No, we have an international line-up.
D:That’s what we wanted.
R: Our challenge and our motto is to bring the people new stuff rather than giving them the same sort of stuff that everyone else has been giving them for years. Artists who need some time and investment to make it happen.
What’s the price range of works for sale?
R: Prints from £50 all the way up to £2250 which is the canvas by Pichiavo, which is on wood actually.
Will you have more real-world exhibitions or will Graffiti Street Gallery stay online?
R: The plan is to have other pop-up shows twice or three times a year.
D: We want to be involved, we don’t want to just be online, this is part of it, we want to live in the world of art. It’s fun isn’t it? It’s great. All the artists are great.
R: We’ve had to work together really closely with these artists to make it happen. So far the critique is good, we are succeeding in something.
Thanks for speaking to The Flaneur and good luck with the project.
