This week sees the huge Central St Martin’s building on Granary Square given over to Strangelove, a moving image festival created by David Gryn and Terry Smith. This includes work from around the world and across CSM and shows how moving image expands possibilities and practices in all disciplines. Gryn explains that the essence of the festival is ‘to enable greater learning, collaboration and empowerment via a medium we all use and observe daily.’

The festival includes a large exhibition entitled Elaborate:Retro Vision of the Future in the Lethaby Gallery, but also features a large mix of screenings, lectures, talks, workshops and events. Elaborate is curated by Esteban Gitton and transforms the gallery into a lab reminiscent of Edison’s Menlo lab work space. The work and investigations of new moving image artists are densely packed in the space, examining new ways of communicating and connecting.

Highlights in the packed programme include The Cabinet of Dr Caligari with live score performed by Matt Harding on Thursday and a screening of Hany by CSM alumni Michal Samir, which is followed by a Q&A with the director. There is also a display of original German film posters from the 1920s along with the talks and experimental events.
