Herve Martijn was born in Avelgem, Belgium in 1961. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and exhibits his art in various galleries in Belgium, Holland and France. His current exhibition is in the Art Singel 100 gallery in Amsterdam.
Unlike many artists who dislike talking about their work Martijn has spoken poetically about his practice.
‘Sometimes the art of painting has little to do with paint. It’s a question of looking at something and getting a feeling, then taking a closer look and perceiving the scene, all over again… Painting is, primarily, ‘pondering’ one’s subject and having doubts along the way; an eternal search probably with no terminus but with some lovely halts en route.’
The work brings many questions to the fore. Do you paint who you are?… or do you become more the real you through what you paint?
Do you perceive what you paint and/or do you paint what you perceive?
Is it possible that you become more human through the act of painting or does (inter)humanity compel you to paint?
Martijn’s work can currently be seen at
