Shirts, T-shirts, suits, vests and golf t-shirts in different colors, used by children from 0 to 4 years. With these clothes , the collection of which began on March 8 at MAXXI , Kaarina Kaikkonen, Finnish artist of the most important on the international scene, will implement her installation in the Piazza del Museo (Museum square).
On Saturday April 14, during the presentation of the work, there will be a grand celebration in the square of the MAXXI that will meet with families at a workshop in which the artist shares with the audience her plan.
She is known for her environmental projects and for large installations created with the use of simple materials such as clothing or paper. These materials refer to the great Scandinavian tradition that sees the relationship between art and environment and of a research, which could be the most successful examples of the twentieth century.
The materials used for the site-specific installation designed for the MAXXI, are clothing of children, consisting of different colors and shapes, which are collected through an educational project with the families of the neighborhood. In this way each person can donate a garment, with all its baggage and memories related to the child’s clothing, and it will ideally become part of the work.
Like a large sail, the work will move with the wind, by connecting one of the gaps that characterize the external profile of MAXXI and reshaping the building by Zaha Hadid. The pastel colors and the softness of the clothes of the children establish a dialogue and will test the hardness of the concrete that characterizes the lines of the museum.
