In their first major exhibition inside Europe, the pioneering group (Unga, Kip, Deso and Tant) present a new large-scale, mixed media installation CRAZY EYE HOTEL, in the heartland of London’s street art scene, The Old Truman Brewery.
Regarded as the first collective of their kind to emerge from Israel, “the Haifa based BFC stand at the forefront of contemporary street art in Israel.” (Professor Catherine Hezser, SOAS). Founded in 2001, the BFC’s success has been phenomenal, both in their native land and on the international scene. In over a decade working together, Broken Fingaz are renowned for their innovative multidisciplinary work, which eschews strict categorisation as either street art or graffiti, but rather redefines the boundaries of this elusive area of art. Elucidating the importance of their contributions to the shape of the contemporary art scene, the BFC’s work was presented in exhibitions at the prestigious Haifa Museum of Art, Rivera, Bat Yam and the Tel Aviv Museum (2011).
Initially working on the street, the BFC’s work now encompasses graphic design, music, film and installation, representative of a new wave in the movement, able to take on new media, inside and outside of the gallery remit. Their native city, Haifa, in northern Israel, is a palpable influence on the BFC’s work, alongside the ephemera of everyday life, 80s horror, comic books and artists such as Schiele and Lautrec to Parra and Mike Giant.
This exhibition introduces the chance to explore the vitality, positivity and spirit of the Broken Fingaz practice for the very first time in Europe.
