About Montgomery Clift
Clift was a stage actor for ten years before he switched to film and was one of the most sought after men in Hollywood in the early 1950s. He was right up there with Marlon Brando, a method actor of extreme ability. He would live the lives of his characters before filming, whether they were Catholic priests or jailbirds. The films showing at the bfi include his career debut playing opposite John Wayne in Red River and Raintree County with Elizabeth Taylor. This was the film he was making when he suffered a major car accident and eager viewers will notice the change in his appearance when he continued filming afterwards.
With looks and a smouldering screen presence Clift was a success on the screen, portraying a succession of moody young men and outsiders. But his good looks were only part of the package. He was also an expert at bringing characters to life through flashes of observed details. The bfi season allows viewers the chance to assess his range – although the car crash depleted his health and he died aged only 46. In later years, reliant on painkillers he was described by Marilyn Monroe as the ‘..only person I know who is in worse shape than I am.’
Dying young has brought him the Hollywood cool tag that often awaits those who do not physically decline in front of us on our screens. However there was more substance to his work than that tag suggests and which ever film you go and see you will be well rewarded.
