GESTURES AND GEOMETRIES
Andrew Paterson – Recent Paintings
Andrew Paterson ‘Extract of cucumber 2012
These paintings share a visual architecture built upon the interaction between overlayed and interwoven fields of colour, gesture and geometric design. Elements and operational modes are drawn together from Japanese and Islamic calligraphy, gestural and hard edged abstraction, graffiti, screenprinting, and the geometries of Moorish design and the aperiodic Penrose tilings. Tension is set up between the considered and the spontaneous. Dissonance is resolved at times through colour harmonics and at others through geometric rhythms.
