Being Cool – A Poem by Kirsty Strickland

Being Cool

I miss the 90’s,

It was easy to be cool

Wearing kickers, hooped earrings, and rolled up skirts to school.

I knew what I had to do,

I knew what I had to wear,

I understood that glittery scrunchies were a must-have for my hair.

But now the rules have changed,

The logic is askew

To be cool, I must be different, the opposite to you.

That makes things quite difficult, us all trying to be unique.

To take up crazy pastimes and be arty and chic.

But I don’t like vintage or knitting or burlesque,

I can’t fathom the appeal of cheese clubs and chess.

I propose we make the norm cool again, its tiring being obscure.

I vote for daytime TV, pub quizzes and matching couture.
