Freak Folk singer’s hip hop-inspired eighth LP is released today
Freak Folk vagabond Devendra Banhart has announced the release details of his new album ‘Mala’.
The album, Banhart’s eighth, was recorded in his Los Angeles home and co-produced by himself and longtime bandmate, Noah Gregson.
Released on March 12th, ‘Mala’ marks Banhart’s first release since his move to Nonesuch Records.
Speaking about the creative direction behind the new album, the pair decided they wanted to explore their love of hip-hop after discovering a vintage Tascam recorder. “A lot of early hip-hop had been made on the Tascam” said Banhart “Knowing my songs are not hip-hop whatsoever, we thought it would be interesting to see how this technology would work for us.”
The album is a follow up to Banhart’s 2009 album, ‘What Will Be’.
You can listen to the first track taken from ‘Mala’, entitled ‘Für Hildegard von Bingen’, below. Hildegard von Bingen was a Catholic saint who lived in the 12th century who was also a composer, writer, and theologist.
